Teaching Requirements for Teaching Overseas

Teaching requirements for teaching overseas varies by country and depends on what kind of work you want. Most well-paying teaching jobs require completion of a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL or TESOL) course as well as a degree in any subject area. However, there are lots of other opportunities around the globe that require only one or the other of these, and some that require nothing except a fluency in English.

Teaching Requirements

There are many volunteering opportunities in impoverished countries around the world like in South America, Asia, and Africa. Many of these opportunities will cost you between $1000-$2000 dollars, and will cover your food and boarding. Some of these programs will even offer excursions and activities to enrich your cultural experience of the area. These opportunities can be very rewarding as you are working in areas where they need your help the most.

If you want to make money while you teach to fund your travels, you will most likely need to get a TEFL certificate. Although it is not always needed, it is usually a good idea to have some experience and knowledge before you are thrown into teaching. TEFL certificates cost about $1500, which will encompass 100 hours of course units, and then 20 hours of classroom based teaching. These courses will provide you with all the knowledge you will need to teach English abroad. Some courses will even provide support for finding you placements.

To get into a TEFL course, you just have to be fluent in English. I recommend choosing a TEFL provider that is accredited by an outside organization. Schools with RSA, CELTA, or Trinity College certification are normally the best and largest TEFL courses.

Having a TEFL certificate will show your employers that you have the teaching knowledge and practical skills to teach English to their students. It will also better prepare you for the teaching environment.
