The Fear of Driving – How To Cope

There is nothing worse than that anxious feeling you get when you are faced with your fear. Sometimes it can be enough to turn you to jelly or even pass out. If your fear is the fear of driving then how do you go about your everyday life? Do you make excuses for why you can’t travel by car or do you openly explain to people that you just can’t drive without having a panic attack? Here we talk about how driving anxiety sufferers lose their independence and their lives.

The thought of not being able to drive doesn’t seem that scary until you think about what you do with your car every day. People without a driving phobia take for granted that they can just grab their keys and head down to the store. People who don’t drive or who have a phobia of driving can’t do this and for many a trip out is quite a big challenge. Try imagining getting a whole week’s worth of groceries for the family home without a car trunk. Try imagining getting to pharmacy when it’s due to shut in 20 minutes and you have to wait for a bus to go round its whole route before it drops you off. People with driving anxiety lose their freedom and their independence when they develop this fear which is why they should try to overcome the phobia.

If this sounds like you then you really do need to get over your driving anxiety for the sake of your sanity if anything else. Think of how much extra time you would have if you didn’t have to wait for the bus or organise a lift? Think about what you would do in an emergency and needed to get to the hospital? Think about your freedom and how you want to live life to the full! Overcome your fear and start having fun again.
