While modern computers have only gotten smaller, modern printers seem to have only gotten larger. As computer desks shrink, most users have resorted to using a small printer stand for their printer, both to hold it up and to prevent the waste of valuable desk space. While it is possible simply to use any sort of table or night stand in order to hold a printer off the floor, many purpose-built printer stands have been developed. These stands may place the printer beneath the desk, to the side, or may even allow the printer to stand above the computer itself. In any event, these stands are designed with an eye towards putting the printer near enough at hand, but keeping it out of the way of the computer and its user. The top three secrets of a good printer stand are thus where it puts the printer, what sort of storage options it has, and if it was custom built to fit a certain printer.

Printer stands can be broken down into two types: those that reposition a printer on an existing desk, and those that place the printer elsewhere. Those that reposition the printer may be very simple, and may not even do much more than bring the printer closer to eye-level while providing storage space for printer paper, ink, and manuals. Larger or more complex on-desk printer stands may offer the option to place the printer above the computer monitor, or else hide it beneath the desk in an out-of-the-way area. Those that place it adjacent to the desk are usually mounted on wheels so that they may be repositioned in order to relocate the printer or access it for repairs. They are generally much larger than their on-desk counterparts are, and often offer shelves or storage bins for printer essentials.

Due to the large need for printer stands, many companies are not producing printer stands designed to go with their specific printer. HP, for example, now offers HP printer stands designed to go with some of their more popular or physically larger models. In fact, it may be possible for a buyer to get a package deal on a HP printer stand to go along with a printer. Such an HP printer stand will not only look good, but will be an ideal fit for the existing model, providing ample storage space and standing flush with the model.
