What Is Portrait Photography

PhotographerDigital portrait photography is described as the skill of capturing real-like images of a person or a subject using different but complimentary digital imaging techniques such as proper subject poses, proper lighting and good photo composition. The first step towards successful portrait photography is being able to access a digital camera. Unlike film cameras, the digital camera allows the user to preview captured images through the LCD screen. From the resulting images, the photographer can choose to discard the photos and conduct another photo session.

Digital portrait photography uses the same rules as portrait photography using film. These rules include proper lighting and setting up the right background in relation to what the subject is wearing. Above the basics of lighting and proper background setting, the digital photographer should be more aware of the need to leave adequate headroom margins. This is meant to allow for portrait cropping in readiness for use in varying aspect ratios and frames.

The portrait mode is a common feature in most digital cameras in the market today, which when enabled, allows the camera to select aperture settings automatically. It also enables automatic selections of functions such as flash setting, sharpness, exposure meter and focal length; settings that enable the photographer to get shots that have short depths on the background. If the user is dissatisfied with the shots captured on the portrait mode, he/she can easily set his/her preferred camera settings manually.

Most portrait photographs are taken on an eye level. This is done in order to ensure balance in the portrait. The subject can face the lens or look elsewhere depending on the angle that the photographer wishes to capture. To succeed in this, the subject and the photographer are required to work together. While natural and artificial lighting can be incorporated to the scenes to improve lighting during digital photography sessions, the digital camera a white balancing feature that allow it to adjust to different lighting conditions. The camera also has an embedded flash, which improves lighting where there are inadequate lighting. Portrait digital photography as a whole has exciting possibilities for not only the photographer, but the subject as well.
