Why Video Games Are So Enjoyable

Depending on age, people have varied opinions of video games. If you grew up in the 60s, most likely you don’t care much for them and would prefer just the three forms of media—the television, the newspaper, and the radio—for entertainment. If you grew up in the 80s or early 90s, you may have gotten the chance to actually enjoy these games via the older game consoles such as the Game Boy or SNES, and think them worthy of spending some time playing—but not too much, mind. But if you grew up much later than those decades, there is only the matter of how much time you spend on these games as almost everyone has tried to play one game at least once in their lives.

Video games are enjoyable because they pull you out of the real world and bring you somewhere else. You can travel to, say, Greece during the medieval era and you can be building your own empire to topple enemy empires with. You can go to some snowy terrain in the northern hemisphere and be investigating a supernatural crime perpetrated by fairies cooperating with goblins. Or you can be jumping on top of the heads of carnivorous flowering plants sprouting out of huge vertical pipes and eating mushrooms that make you grow and extra powerful when you come across them, all so you can rescue your princess from a reptilian villain (KRUB KRUB KRUB). Well, at least that’s how most games are these days—adventure-filled and graphically intense. But there are also those that are simple yet still engaging, like word games, puzzles, and two-player fighting games. The common denominator is that they all absorb you, even for just a while, and stimulate your mind to solve the hero’s problem on how to save her heroine, dance your way to a showdown victory, or make your restaurant the most high-tech and most famous one of them all.

Whatever your age is, whatever decade you grew up in, there surely are one or two video games that have been made just for your enjoyment.
